A beginner crochet hat is one of the most popular projects for those who are just learning how to crochet. When you're ready to move beyond flat things like scarves, a simple hat pattern can be just the thing to introduce you to increasing, decreasing and shaping. Fortunately, there are plenty of very easy hat patterns available in crochet books from your local yarn shop, and online. Here is a very simple one to get you started.
This cute little hat with a cuffed brim is perfect for beginners. It works up quickly in half double crochet using worsted weight yarn, and is sized to fit most adult heads. This hat is worked from the brim up to the crown.
Materials:
1 skein worsted-weight yarn in the color of your choice
Size H crochet hook
Stitch marker
Directions:
Chain 73. Join the ends with a slip stitch to form a circle, taking care to make sure it's not twisted. Place a stitch marker at the join. Begin the next row, work in HDC in rounds. Do not join at the end of the row, just continue to work rounds. Keep working until the piece measures about 7 1/2 to 8 inches long. Make sure to end the last row at the stitch marker.
Now it's time to begin shaping the crown. Work the first row of the crown as follows:
Work 1 hdc,
Work next 2 HDC together to decrease 1 HDC
Work 2 HDC
Repeat steps 2 and 3 around, ending with 1 HDC. This round should now have 54 HDC. Next, work 1 round even in HDC.
For the next round, work 1 HDC, then work next 2 HDC together to decrease 1. Repeat these steps until the end of the round. This round should now have 36 HDC. Work 1 more round even in HDC.
To finish the top of the crown, work 2 hdc together to decrease one st, repeating this around each round until you have about 8 or 9 stitches left. Fasten off, leaving a 6-inch tail. Thread a yarn needle with the tail end, and work around the top hole to close.
Your hat is now finished! Cuff up the brim, and try it on. To make a smaller version of this hat for a child, use thinner yarn and a smaller hook.
