PostSubject: How to Knit Socks   Fri May 23, 2014 5:01 am

Would you like to know how to knit socks, but are terrified of all of the complicated instructions? Do you only know a few stitches? Does the idea of using circular needles have you shaking? You can compromise and sew toe "socklets" and legwarmers until you feel confident enough to progress on to the next step in knitting.
How to Knit Socks: "Socklet" for Toes
Use a weight category 4 yarn for this project. You will also need size 8 knitting needles and a large-eye blunt needle. The gauge is 24 stitches = 4 inches. Your "socklet" will be about 8 inches around and seven inches long. Of course, you can adjust the length and width of this sock according to your foot size.
To start, cast on 54 stitches. Leave a 12 inch tail of yarn when you cast on. You will use the tail later to sew the socklet together.
Simply knit three, purl three to the end of each row.
When you reach row 37, knit 2 together, knit 1, purl 2 together, purl one and repeat until you have 36 stitches.
For the final row, knit 2 together, knit 1, purl 2 together, purl one and repeat until you have 18 stitches.
Bind off.
Take the tail and sew the socklet together, including the toe.
Variations: Knit using two or more different yarn colors.
How to Knit Socks: Legging
You will need two sizes of knitting needles, size 11 and size 13, for this legging. Don't worry! It's not as scary as it sounds. Your yarn should be bulky and you will need one of those large-eye needles. The gauge is 2.5 stitches = 1 inch with size 11 needles.
After you cast on, knit 1 and purl 2 to complete every row until you cast off regardless of the size of the needles that you are using.
Using the size 13 needles, cast on 27 stitches. Then start your pattern.
After 38 rows, switch to size 11 needles and repeat the pattern for another 12 rows.
Bind off on the wrong side and sew the seams together.
You will end up with a legging about 16 inches long suitable in a small/medium size.
Like the socklets, you can create your own color pattern to customize your leggings.
